Hi all,
We are currently reading "Incarceron" by C. Fisher. Book #2 is due out the end of this month ("Sapphique'). "Incarceron" is a book that Tim picked and what a great book it is...a mixture of fantasy, sci-fi, and adventure all mixed together! And remember to watch for the eye. This book is an excellent read!

We have another Wii game. We now have Mario Kart thanks to grant monies from the NH Charitable Foundation. Last week 4 of us played and it was unanimous! We love this game and had a lot of laughs about this game....we hope you can join us for our next gaming day!

No meeting on Thursday Dec. 30th as the Ham Room is being renovated. See you next year!

Silk Painting Workshop on October 23rd-SIGN UP NOW!

Teens and tweens in Conway are encouraged to sign up for a silk painting workshop at the Conway Public Library on Saturday, October 23rd. Artist Jay Rancourt will teach us how to paint on silk. Each student will be given a silk scarf, materials and instructions on how to create a beautiful scarf for wearing or displaying on a wall. Additional scarves will cost $7. per scarf and students will have time to create a maximum of 3 scarves.

What: Silk Scarf Painting for Teens and Tweens
When: October 23rd, 10 am- 3 pm (All day so bring your lunch and snacks!)
Where: Conway Public Library - Ham Community Room
Who: Anyone in 6th grade or older BUT not an adult!
Why: Why not? This is a great workshop and you may have some nice gifts when done.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS NECCESSARY! Call the library at 447. 5552 to sign up.

Here are some of the upcoming Thursdays at the library.
Today we talked...alot about events and books and everything else too!

Next week is Teen Tech Week and we will be Wii-ing on Thursday, the 11th of March from 3:30-5:30. Its also gadget day! Bring your favorite tech thing today!

On Thursday, the 18th we will have chocolate day...an hour of luscious chocolate in a variety of forms. (Thanks to Bavarian Haus in North Conway for donating some of the goodies!)

The 25th of March will be movie day. Join us as we watch "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"

Refreshments are always served and talking is endles.....our current book is "Ophelia" by Lisa Klein........thanks to Jenn for putting together the activities for March!

We enjoyed watching "HOLES" and feel the book and movie are both great! Next week, on February 4th we have Teen Advisory Board to plan for the month of March! Erica is in charge of February and is working on some ideas for programs for this month. I think we are going to love her book choice but I'm keeping that a secret for now!

Movie Screening of HOLES

We are reading "Holes" by Louis Sachar and will discuss it on Thursday, January 21st from 3:30-4:30 and then.....

watching HOLES on Thursday, January 28th from 3:30-5:30 pm. Its rated PG and is a great action adventure at Camp Green Lake. By the way, there is nothing green at this camp and there is no lake. Everyone is invited and popcorn will be served!

Babysitter's Workshop Soon-Sign up now!

Hi all,
Wow! Are we busy at the library! I wanted to remind you all of the upcoming Red Cross
Babysitter's Workshop on January 9th from 10 am - 5 pm! The cost is $45 and please register now by calling the Granite Chapter of the American Red Cross at 225.6697 ext. 207 or go online to www.concord-redcross.org . This training is designed for 11 to 15 year olds and can help you with a variety of aspects of how to become a safe and knowledgeable babysitter. This course is taught by certified Red Cross Instructors. You will receive your Babysitting Certificate upon completion of the day long course.

Sign up now as Saturday, January 9th is just around the corner. Call or sign up with the Red Cross. The training will be held in the Ham Community Room of the Conway Public Library.

Rebecca, the Settler's Green Teen and her friend, Robbie Recycle!

Hi all,

We did it...we won a second place prize in the Settler's Green scarecrow contest! Wow...what a lot of hard work and I just want all of you to know that this was a real team project with people donating things and finding things and oh yes, hammering things too!

The staff at Settler's Green wants to keep the scarecrows through Halloween so be sure to get down there and find our display. Its near the food cafe called Wrapsodies N' Greens which is close to the front entrance.

Congratulations to all the YA kids at Conway Public Library....hard work but a job well done!
Tommorow we will begin our next book "The War of the Worlds" by HG Wells. Its also our Wii gaming day!

Hi Everyone!
Summer is in full swing now and we have had a great time on Thursdays. Movies, Gaming including the Wii, and books of course. Looking for something to do...please join us on Thursdays as we eat and talk about..., well everything.

Check out our book list and see some of the things we are reading....next will be "Peeled" by Joan Bauer. Its a book about a high school girl who wants to be a journalist but the big story she is covering is abou a ghost....how can she get to the truth?

I hope to get up the August calendar soon...for this week, Augst 6th, it is Teen Advisory Board from 3:30-4:30 pm....Bring your ideas and I'll bring the pizza!

Author LInda Urban is coming to Conway on May 14th

Hi everyone!

We are very excited to have Linda Urban coming to the Library on Thursday, May 14th at 3:30 pm. She wrote:

which is on the Great Stone Face list for 2008-2009. Her book also got 5* on Amazon.com. The book is available for loaning at the library as we have multiple copies for bookclub! Audios as well!

Linda will talk to us about the writing process. her books, and books will be available for purchasing and signing thanks to White Birch Books! She will also be promoting her new picture book at 10 am at MWV Children's Museum in North Conway, again with the books available for purchasing. A BIG thankyou to Laura Lucy and White Birch Books for helping with putting this all together!

Everyone is invited to either location as we welcome Linda Urban to the Mount Washington Valley. Refreshments will be served!!

Hi All,
Just a reminder that Teen Advisory Board will meet this Thursday to discuss upcoming plans including our author visit with Linda Urban!!! I'm also looking for volunteers to help out in the library....please let me know if you are interested.

I am currently reading an adult book "March" by Geraldine Brooks....its set during the Civil War and is about the father of the "Little Women" as he goes off to war....I am enjoying it very much. What are you reading? Remember, we will get a new book to read this week, too.

Wow! March Madness for the YA's

Hi gang!
Here's what March looks like on Thursdays at 3:30 pm!
*March 5th we had a great Teen Advisory Board Meeting and have really got a new project in mind for helping others. Check out http://www.theshipsproject.com/ to see what we are attempting now...a suggestion from Amanda. So bring dark colors of yarn and size 7 or 8 knitting needles to learn how to knit and crochet....we hope to make hats for the men and women overseas. For now, we are practicing our K1,P1 "stuff"!

*March 12th, it was a Wii day....lots of fun to watch everyone and some crazy knitting (and eating) going on while we wait for a turn. These gaming days are soooo much FUN!

This is the last of our graphic artist visits and Jay promisies to be entertaining and teach us more about cartooning! Bring your pencils and paper if you can. Two authors in less than a month...wow, how lucky are we! And be sure to check out the graphic novel collection in the YA area of the library.

February Happenings at the Library

Wow! Its been a busy month! We had:
****Teen Advisory Board on Thursday, February 5th
Alot of conversation about our next project and we are gearing up for a visit from two graphic artists. The first graphic novel we are reading is "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan. We have read it at home and are also reading it together because it is an amazing book.

****On Thursday, November 12th we had Book Group (I think we need a good name!)
Here we spent most of our time talking about "The Arrival", eating snacks and giggling too! We are all quite wowed out with "The Arrival" and everyone is looking forward to this week where we will talk abouut it some more...what an amazing graphic novel.

Tomorrow, Thursday, February 19th at 3:00---Wii Gaming day and we will also talk about the book and work on our next project...hats for troops....so far we are learning how to cast on and to knit. Eventually, we will learn to purl and also to decrease in order to make these hats. We sure have taken on a project this time!

********FEBRUARY 26th****3:30- 5:00 PM*****Author/Graphic artist Peaco Todd****** will do a workshop with us on creating our own comic avatar. Everyone is welcome!(There will be a second workshop with another illustrator in March!!!)

YA Community Service Projects

Congratulations Young Adult Group!

I just want to thank all of you who have particpated in our community service projects. I am so proud of you and many people will appreciate the work we have done so far. Our projects include: volunteering in the library garden, making blankets (thanks to fleece donated by Ragged Mountain) for Memorial Hospital, and collecting food for the local food shelf. At Teen Advisory Board last Thursday we discussed what we want to do next and there seems to be a lot of interest in doing something for the troops overseas....Jenn H. is researching this for us. We are thinking about making scarves...and yes, I can teach you! Another idea was to "adopt" a soldier. This is all good stuff and keep up the great work!

Wow! What a busy Fall we've had. The blankets are coming out great and we will get them to the hospital once they are ALL done. If you have blanket you are making, please finish it up and bring it in to the library. Also, remember to bring in food for our box that we will donate to the local food shelf!

YA Activities in September-"The Hobbit"

Hi!
We have some great activities planned for September and October is shaping up nicely too. Yesterday at our Teen Advisory Board Meeting we mostly ate and talked! In and around that we worked on our community services projects.

First, we had some kids watering the gardens at the library. While they were doing that, the rest of us carried in a "ton" of fleece that was donated from Ragged Mountain. Thank you Ragged Mountain! With this fleece, we will begin our fall project of making blankets to donate to Memorial Hospital. The blankets will be given to either pediatric or hospice patients. Next week we will begin to cut and work on our blankets.

I handed out the next book, "The Hobbit" and we will read the first several chapters. We are going to read this book leisurely and view the movie near the end of the month. We have decided to continue to meet on Thursdays at 3:30. With everyone's busy schedule its hard to find a day that works for all so we will stay with Thursdays and hope all can make it!!

Events for September 2008 include:
***Thursday, September 11th, 3:30-4:30 YA Book Group-reading "The Hobbit" and working on blankets
***Thursday, September 18th, 3:30-5:30 Wii Gaming

Hi all!

We will be talking about "Blue Fingers" today, Thursday, August 14th at 3:30. The next book we will read is "Marley" by John Grogan....a great dog story. We also need to write in our Aussie blog and weed the garden so please join us and help out!

Our next event will be a Wii gaming day on Thursday, August 21st from 3:30-5:30 pm. We're having great fun with Wii Sports. Let me know if you have any thoughts on where we can get inexpensive Wii games!

On Thursday, August 28th, we will meet for book club at 3:30....last get together before school starts...UGH!

Wii Gaming on Thursday, July 17th!

Just a reminder that we will start at 3pm this Thursday as we have lots to do....especially gaming! I suggest that any of you that can come in earlier on Thursday, PLEASE DO! We will be working on posts for our Australian blog....if you have time, write up something ahead of time for our AU friends and if it sounds good, you can post it that afternoon!

We will also be watering the garden areas which only takes about 15 minutes...and then we can Wii the afternoon away. I also have the next book to pass out so see you Thursday and bring a friend!

Teen Advisory Board

Remember there will be an Advisory Board Meeting on Thursday, July 3rd at 3:30 pm. We will be brainstorming what we want to do for a community service project. We also need to talk about gaming....when we want to do more of it and how often?

By the way, our garden area looks great....thanks for your help with that! Bring a friend to either book club or teen advisory meetings and choose a free book for yourself! We have lots of new titles to choose from!

Gaming at the Library on June 26th!

Join us on Thursday, June 26th at 3:30 pm for an afternoon of gaming! We have the Wii game system up and running and will experiment with playing the Wii Sports games. We will also discuss the book "The Seeing Stone" as we are reading that now. Refreshements of course! Thanks to a grant from NH Charitable Foundation the library now has it own Wii system and we get do lots of gaming!

The YA Group will meet every Thursday over the summer so be sure to bring a friend!

Teen Scenes Movie Day

Join us for "Seabiscuit" on Wednesday, June 11th at 3:15 as we watch this great movie about an amazing horse story. We just read the book by Laura Hillenbrand and invite everyone to watch the movie with us. Its a longish movie so we will start at 3:15 and should be done by 5:35. And popcorn of course!

Book Group Update

We are reading "Eragon" by Paolini for the month of April. This book is Ryan's pick and while some of you have read it, no one seems to mind reading it again! This is the first book in the Inheritance Cycle. The awaited third book will be out in September 2008 and is called "Brisingr". Check out the website at www.alagesia.com for more information! Isinglass Award-Time to Vote

All 7th and 8th graders!
The time has come to vote. The Isinglass Award voting is taking place now and all ballots must be in to me by Friday, May 2nd! Ballots can be found in the YA area of the library or ask me. They are also available at www.barringtonlibrary.com under the Teen Zone which is a good area to check out for teen information anyway.

We have definitely read some of the titles on the Insinglass reading list for this year. Let your opinion count - and vote!

Also remember Teen Advisory Board is this Wednesday, April 9th at 3:30 pm. And yes we will be having pizza!

Our book group is for young adults in grade 6 and up! This book is considered appropriate for ages 9-12 but we are reading it because there are great topics for conversation for the tweens and teen and....well, for everyone. Its a 2001 Newbery Honor book!
